Historical notes on golf

The earliest form of the “club and ball” game of golf is known to have been played by the ancient Romans, in France and in the Netherlands in the Middle Ages.

Modern golf has its origins in Scotland where four centuries ago the game outlasted the laws prohibiting its practice in favor of the more useful sport of archery, which golf was endangering due to its growing popularity.

The first rules for playing a match were adopted in 1754 by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland (R&A).

How to play

Players compete individually or in pairs using different clubs to move a ball in an attempt to complete holes in as few strokes as possible.

The ball must be sent into a series of 18 consecutive holes.

Each hole, or rather the part of the course between the teeing ground and the actual hole, is surrounded or crossed by obstacles of various kinds such as sand, bunkers, watercourses or rough terrain.

It is played in match play where the team that has the advantage over the greatest number of holes wins or in stroke play where the player who completes the course in the fewest number of strokes wins.

The route

It includes the entire area where the game is played. A normal golf course consists of 18 holes – meaning by hole the area between the teeing ground and the putting green where the actual hole is located. The length of the holes varies from a minimum of 100 to a maximum of 600 yards (91.43 – 548 cm) .
The “teeing ground” is a flat, level area where players begin each hole. “Through the green” refers to the entire course area, excluding the teeing ground and putting green, and includes fairways and rough, but not obstacles like water hazards or bunkers. The putting green is a specially prepared grassy area with a hole that is 4.25 inches in diameter and 4 inches deep. A flagpole, 7 feet long, is placed in the hole to mark its location.

Sticks and ball

In a round (18 holes) a player or a pair sharing a set of clubs can play a maximum of 14 clubs. There are three types of clubs :-

  • Woods : Typically used for long-distance shots, including drivers for teeing off and fairway woods for longer approach shots.
  • Irons : Designed for a variety of shots, including approach shots and those from the fairway or rough. They range from long irons (for longer distances) to short irons (for shorter, more precise shots).
  • Wedges : A subset of irons, wedges are used for short approach shots, including pitching, chipping, and sand shots. Common types include pitching wedges, sand wedges, and lob wedges.
